Last week we celebrated Australia’s cultural diversity and marked Harmony Week both in class and with an interactive K-Pop performance.
We certainly had lots of fun (see photo gallery below).
A very big thank you to the many parents & carers who have booked Parent/Teacher meetings this week. If you haven’t already made arrangements and would like to book a meeting time, please contact your child’s teacher.
NAPLAN
Well done to our Year 3 and 5 students for their application in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests over the past 2 weeks. Our students are to be commended for the realism and positive attitude.
NAPLAN is a point in time window into student performance and progress. As a diagnostic, it complements a broader qualitative and quantitative school based assessment plan to ensure that our teaching & learning programmes are evidence based and responsive to learning needs across the school.
If parents & carers have any questions about NAPLAN please contact me. I would be delighted to answer any questions you may have.
Easter Raffle and Hat Parade
The Annual Easter Raffle will be held as part of the Easter Hat Parade in the last week of term, Thursday 10 April.
Donations for the Easter hampers would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the office or handed to your child’s teacher.
Easter raffle tickets have been sent home to sell to family and friends. Ticket prices are $1 each or 3 for $2. Please ensure that name and class/contact details are clearly identifiable on the raffle ticket stubs and return to your child’s teacher with the money. Raffle tickets can also be purchased before school outside the Staff Room.
We encourage our students to think sustainably and particularly consider the use of non-biodegradable products such as single use plastic when making their Easter hats.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Easter Hat Parade.
School Attendance
Regular school attendance is a core school responsibility. The positive impact of being on time and at school every day cannot be over emphasised.
The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their compulsory school aged children regularly attend school.
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
- being sick or having an infectious disease;
- having an unavoidable medical appointment;
- being required to attend a recognised religious holiday; or
- exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record.
As a reminder:
- ‘running late’ or ‘slept in’ do not count as a justifiable reason for a partial absence; and
- core literacy times across all K-6 classes start at 9am with reinforced reading.
Please contact me if you have any questions and/or refer to the NSW DoE School Attendance Policy.
P&C
Involvement in the P&C is encouraged and is a fabulous way to become actively involved in our school.
The next P&C meeting will be held in the library on Thursday 3 April, 5:30-6:30.
New P&C members are always welcome.
The yellow P&C recycling bins for drink cans and plastics bottles are located on the OOSH Verandah. As there is an onsite collection, please no glass bottles.
If you have any questions, P&C can be contacted at chifleypcinfo@gmail.com.
As Principal of Chifley PS, I believe in strong educational partnerships. My office door is always open if you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s education.

The Chifley Science Enrichment Group explored physical and chemical change by conducting 2 experiments.
In the first experiment, students observed a physical change as soft drink cans were crushed through a process of heat and then being quickly submerged in water. Chemical change was detected after adding different chemicals together. Students noticed a change in their colour and viscosity.

Book Club (Stage 3)
The Stage 3 Book Clubbers have begun their study of a brilliant novel, 'The Goldfish Boy' by Lisa Thompson. This story, about finding friendship is page-turning, heartbreaking, but ultimately life-affirming. Students kicked off their first session by exploring the question, What is 'normal' behaviour? Students engaged in a great discussion about whether a 'normal' person exists, or if we all have quirks that make us a little bit unusual?...
